Siya Khumalo

Siya Khumalo is a socio-political commentator who speaks and writes on religion, politics and sex — the “triquetra of power” that regulates the flow of economic capacity and oppression.

In his debut book You Have To Be Gay To Know God (Kwela Books, 2018), he shows how politicians sometimes use homophobic religious teachings as the basis of a mandate that does not to solve real challenges, but instead blames “the other” (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex people) in exchange for easy power, privilege and position. You Have To Be Gay To Know God won the Desmond Tutu-Gerrit Brand Literary Prize.
